Frequently Asked Questions

We know navigating EV incentives and installations can be complex. Here are answers to the most common questions about the Ampere my Home Program. Please reach us at womenwhocharge@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The Ampere my Home Program, run by Women Who Charge, is an initiative that provides free Level 2 EV charging station equipment to eligible low-to-moderate income homeowners in Colorado. Our goal is to eliminate the financial barrier of purchasing the charger itself, making it easier for homeowners to transition to and benefit from owning an electric vehicle.

The charging equipment itself is provided free of charge as a donation through our program. This is a significant cost saving for you.

You are responsible for the installation labor and any necessary electrical upgrades (like panel or wiring work). However, our team provides expert support to ensure you maximize available rebates to cover most, if not all, of these remaining installation costs.

You will receive a refurbished, quality-tested Level 2 (240V) charging station, which is the standard for fast residential charging. The specific model will depend on the inventory donated to us, but it will be a high-quality, brand-name unit (e.g., a Tesla Wall Connector or a comparable Level 2 charger). These units charge your vehicle significantly faster and more conveniently than a standard 120V wall outlet.

The Tesla Wall Connector, uses the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. The NACS standard is rapidly becoming the industry standard for home charging.

If you own a electric vehicle that is not a Tesla, you will need an adapter. It is a J1772-to-NACS adapter to connect to the charger.

We prioritize applicants who reside in Colorado, are homeowners (owner and primary resident) of a single-family home in the Xcel Energy service territory, and  already own or lease a battery electric vehicle (EV) or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Income & Location: Meet low-to-moderate household income (typically under 80% Area Median Income) and/or reside in a Disproportionately Impacted Community (DIC) or environmental justice area.
  • Affiliation: Are a member of Women Who Charge.

No. While the program is administered by Women Who Charge, eligibility is based solely on your household's income, homeownership status, and location, not your gender. Click here to apply.

We understand that service or panel upgrades are often required. We provide support to help you access state programs, such as the Colorado Energy Office’s Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR), which can provide funding specifically for necessary electrical panel service upgrades, ensuring your home is safely prepared for the EV charging station. The electrician coordinating your installation can typically perform this panel upgrade as part of the overall installation project.

Thanks to our partnerships with Xcel Energy and qualified electricians like EZ-EV Electrical, we are able to streamline the process significantly.

The typical timeline involves:

  1. WWC Application Review: Less than one week (Our internal review is fast!).
  2. Rebate and Permitting: 2–4 weeks (we assist with all paperwork, and our Xcel Energy partnership helps streamline this phase).
  3. Electrical Prep, Equipment Pick-Up, and Final Charger Installation: Averages 2 weeks. Once the necessary electrical work is scheduled and the home is prepared, the contractor coordinates pick-up and completes the installation quickly. The free charging station is released to the contractor only after the electrician confirms the home is fully prepared and the electrical work (labor/upgrades) is complete.

We aim to have your charger installed and operational within 4–6 weeks after final approval and successful documentation submission.
